Blending Physical and Virtual Worlds through Advanced Multimedia and Artificial Intelligence

Even in festive time. Merry Christmas.

Multimedia Communications Laboratory

Multimedia Communications Laboratory is a network of labs focused on research and development in the fields of augmented and virtual reality, hybrid forms of communication, user interaction, smart automation, and artificial intelligence. The laboratory system is operated at the Institute of Multimedia Information and Communication Technologies, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava, Slovakia.

Research

Novel View Synthesis

3D Gaussian Splatting, Image Registration

3D Gaussian Splatting is a novel, image-based 3D reconstruction method promising near-photographic quality of 3D models. Our research focuses on speeding up the scene optimization process, reducing of source data requirements, and time sequence transmission (3D video streaming).

Hybrid Communication

Democritizing Meeting Presence, Hybrid Meetings

In this field, we conceptualize the idea of a common point of meeting for both local and remote participants regardless of their means of joining a meeting, creating a more immersive videoconferencing. We aim at mitigating the feeling of distance and non-involvement of remote participants.

Applications

Virtual Teleport

Vitual Space of Meeting, Telepresence

Part of the broader concept of hybrid communication, virtual teleportation focuses on bringing meeting participants and, generally, any remote users, into action by leveraging virtual reality and metaverse paradigms in lifelike environments using digital twins of spaces.

Spatial Capturing

Integrated Camera Nests, Camera Rigs, Capturing Layouts

Part of the photogrammetric research, we work on building several image capture devices (built upon patented technology), focusing on optimization of hardware parameters for quality 3D scene and 3D sequence reconstrution.

Smart Home

Smart Automation, Remote Control

With smart devices already available commny among people, new paradigms have to be investigated regarding intelligent automation, autonomous environment control and ambient computing, enabling two-way overlap between the virtual and physical worlds.

Practical Competence in AI

LLM Applications, RAG

Embarking on the AI wave, we utilize our machine learning expertise and user-centric orientation to develop AI-based applications for business, government and education. In this endeavour, we emhasize quality user experience, working closely with the end users of the solutions.

Showcases

We collate our efforts in a list of demos created by researchers and students.

Projects

Members of our team worked and cooperate on numerous national and international research and innovation projects.

Our experience includes national projects like VEGA, APVV or KEGA. We are active in multiple Erasmus+ projects with previous successful highly rated involvement in FP7 and Horizon 2020 EC schemes. We are open to cooperation on new calls in our area of expertise, on both basic and applied research.
