The rapid development of digital technologies and the emphasis on globalized collaboration have highlighted the need for new ways of online communication that can faithfully simulate personal contact while ensuring the trustworthiness and security of transmitted data. The COVID-19 pandemic has further accelerated the need for innovative forms of remote interaction that have the potential to fundamentally impact industry, healthcare, education and the public sector.
The DISIC project focuses on the design, development and validation of comprehensive and secure methods for online immersive multi-user communication in 3D space. The main objective is to strengthen the research potential in the field of information and communication technologies (ICT), especially the immersive communication segment with an emphasis on identity trustworthiness and data security.
Objectives of the Project
- Design of a new system architecture for immersive multi-user communication: The architecture will be designed with an emphasis on robustness, scalability, intuitive user interface and integration of advanced security features.
- Research and development of advanced methods for secure transmission, processing and visualization of multimedia 3D data: The project focuses on the design of original algorithms for secure data acquisition, transmission and presentation, using the latest approaches based on NeRF or 3D Gaussian Splatting.
- Building an experimental laboratory for immersive communication: Creating a testbed will allow verifying and comparing new algorithms in real conditions, including security and user aspects.
- Comprehensive testing and evaluation of the designed system: Emphasis will be placed on comparison with existing solutions, security analyses, assessment of the quality of the immersive experience and validation of proof-of-concept.
Scientific and Technological Innovation
The project reflects the latest knowledge in the field of 3D image processing, machine learning (deep learning), and security protocols for hybrid and mixed-reality systems. Attention is paid to integrity, authentication and privacy protection in immersive communication environments (VR, AR, holoportation). The solution includes advanced encryption methods, multi-factor authentication, post-quantum cryptography and protection against deepfake manipulations.
The key advantage of the project is the synergistic cooperation of STUBA (expertise in digital signal processing and multimedia) and ARDACO (leading know-how in cybersecurity, infrastructure and certified services).
The DISIC project is implemented with the support of the grant call for digitalization of the economy, at the level of basic and applied research (TRL 1-3).
